ICC YAAF: Careers in International Arbitration - Key Insights for Emerging Practitioners
Join us for an insightful discussion on navigating the evolving international arbitration landscape, exploring opportunities and addressing challenges for the next generation of practitioners.
This new edition of the ICC YAAF Africa Passing on the baton series highlights the innovative and practical contributions of emerging practitioners from Lusophone Africa to advancing arbitration and ADR across the continent.
Objective
Arbitration is gaining momentum across African commercial and investment landscapes, yet meaningful access for emerging professionals remains uneven. The boundaries between advocacy, arbitral practice, and other dispute resolution roles are increasingly blurred, demanding versatile skills and a clear understanding of institutional pathways.
These dynamics raise critical considerations for young practitioners seeking to build credible, ethical, and sustainable careers in arbitration.
This panel brings together regional and international experts to explore the essential competencies required of young arbitrators and counsel. Discussions will examine the advantages and limitations of early-career opportunities such as tribunal secretary roles, specialized training programs, mentoring structures, and participation in professional networks while addressing structural barriers in Lusophone Africa and identifying practical strategies to help participants position themselves competitively in the evolving arbitration market.
Beyond the substantive dialogue, the event offers a valuable platform for participants to engage with peers, exchange perspectives, and strengthen connections within the international arbitration and ADR community.
