Wednesday 13 October 2026: FIDIC Contracts & Dispute Resolution Workshop: The Life of a Dispute from Engineer to Arbitration
Separate registration required, please contact: training@fidic.org
Workshop Description
This workshop will provide the basic principles of the FIDIC Contracts and a practical overview of how disputes are managed under FIDIC contracts through the different stages of the contractual dispute resolution process. Using a single case study as the backbone of the session, participants will follow the evolution of a dispute from the initial role of the Engineer, through agreement and determination, Dispute Boards, amicable settlement, and ultimately arbitration.
The workshop will examine how the same issue may be treated differently depending on the stage at which it is addressed, highlighting the advantages, risks, costs, timing implications, and possible outcomes of each mechanism. The case study will also allow participants to explore practical variations and alternative paths that disputes may take in real projects.
The session is designed to be interactive and will combine conceptual explanations with practical examples and discussion with attendees.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to: .
- Understand the main features of FIDIC Contracts
- Understand the different stages of dispute resolution under FIDIC contracts.
- Identify the role and function of the Engineer, Dispute Boards, amicable settlement, and arbitration.
- Analyse how disputes evolve throughout the contractual process.
- Evaluate the advantages, limitations, timing, and cost implications of each dispute resolution mechanism.
- Gain practical insight into strategic decision-making in construction disputes through a case-study approach.
Prerequisites
It is recommended participants have a basic understanding of construction principles across contracts and dispute resolution concepts and are practicing in the region.
The workshop will be particularly beneficial for professionals currently involved in the administration of FIDIC contracts, claims management, or ongoing disputes, including engineers, lawyers, contract managers, consultants, contractors, employers, and Dispute Board practitioners.
